In July, one of the most long-awaited events of world baseball will take place — the annual Major League Baseball (MLB) draft lottery. During the ceremony, the best clubs in the world will reserve the rights to the most talented young players. Over time, the top 100 MLB prospects will have the opportunity to play for the teams that gave their choice for them in the draft. What to expect from the upcoming ceremony, who are the favorites, and what is the MLB draft in general — you will find out in our expert review.

Top 10 MLB draft prospects

A lot of young stars will be selected at the 2022 MLB draft in Los Angeles. These guys are predicted to have a successful future, a long and rich career with trophies and individual achievements. The following ten players currently top the MLB prospect rankings list:

What is MLB draft?

MLB is the main baseball league in the world. Every year it holds a draft lottery, in which the league clubs secure the rights to the most talented young players from high schools, colleges and amateur clubs. Teams have time to sign contracts with top MLB prospects. At the same time, players may refuse, for various reasons, to enter into an agreement with the club that chose them. In this case, the team loses the rights to the player and receives compensation from the league, as well as from the team with which it eventually signs a contract. 

All MLB clubs participate in the draft. The order of selection of players is determined based on the results of the teams in the past season. The worse the club performed, the higher his choice will be, and the better player he will be able to choose. Thus, MLB contributes to increased competition in the league.

How will the top MLB prospects be picked?

The procedure for selecting the top 100 MLB prospects in 2022 will be held for the last time according to the old scenario. Starting next year, on a new collective bargaining agreement between MLB and MLBPA, the first six picks in the draft will be determined by a special lottery. Its participants will be 18 clubs that failed to make it to the playoffs. 

The 2022 draft will be held in Los Angeles according to the old rules. Thirty clubs will make a total of 616 player selections in twenty rounds. The right to choose under the first number was given to the Baltimore Orioles club. Last season, he finished last in the MLB regular season. A total of 39 selections will be made in the first round. There will be three compensatory choices among them. Two of them were received by the Colorado and Cincinnati clubs (31 and 32 picks respectively) for the fact that the previously selected players Trevor Story and Nick Castellanos did not want to sign contracts with them. 

The highest compensation pick (11) was received by New York. This is because the club failed to sign a contract with Kumar Rocker, who was selected under the tenth number in the first round of 2021.

Hundreds of young North American players are competing for selection in the MLB draft in 2022. The number of talents is not limited to the top 100 MLB prospects only. A total of 616 picks will be made. The following players have the greatest chances to get into the TOP 10.

Druw Jones

Druw Jones is considered the main favorite of the 2022 MLB draft. He is the son of the great former MLB player Andruw Jones, who in 17 years of career at the highest level played five times in the MLB All-Star Game and won the Golden Glove Award in center field 10 times. 

Druw has every chance to follow the path of the father. He showed elite numbers in his Wesleyan High School team to the Georgia state championship and was named Georgia’s Gatorade Player of the Year. 

Jones mainly plays in the center, but the scouts are sure that he has every opportunity to prove himself as a solid shortstop. In any case, this is one of the top MLB prospects and a future star of world baseball.

Jackson has wonderful genes. He is the son of the famous former player Matt Holliday. The latter participated in the MLB All-Star Game seven times, and launched 316 home runs in 17 years of career. Matt is the winner of the NL Championship Series MVP Award. And in 2011, he won the World Series title with the Cardinals.

Besides, Elijah is an elite runner. He can cover distances quickly and steal bases. High speed should help Green become an elite center fielder, despite his large size. 

It is expected that Elijah will sign a contract with any of the teams that will make their choice in his favor. His desire to play at a high professional level is too great to refuse offers.

Termarr Johnson is one of the most ready to play at a high level of the draft participants. According to numerous scout analyses, it is possible that he is the best pure prep hitter in decades. Many scouts are even sure that Termarr deserves the highest score of 80 points for his hitter skills. One of the top 100 prospects of MLB himself understands his talents, and does not hesitate to express his ambitions: I want to be one of the best players in MLB history. I don’t want to be just a role player — my goal is to get into the Hall of Fame after my career ends, — says Johnson. 

Termarr still has to work on himself to achieve his goals. The strength of the hands and the overall speed of movement are not yet at the elite level.

Brooks Lee

It was not by chance that Brooks Lee decided to connect his life with baseball — his family has great traditions in this game. The athlete even played for the Mustangs college team under the guidance of his father, head coach Larry Lee. The latter led the Mustangs for 20 (!) seasons. 

The fact that Brooks still plays baseball can be called a miracle. In October 2019 the player tore the lateral collateral ligament in his knee. At the same time, he was diagnosed with a rupture of the hamstrings of the biceps femoris muscle. However, Brooks managed to cope with health problems, and is now considered one of the top MLB prospects 2022.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper included the player on the symbolic All-American honors team. He was also named one of the three finalists for the Golden Spike Award. 

One of top MLB prospects Kevin Parada has a unique batting stance, which is noted by baseball experts. When preparing to hit the ball, the player hangs the bat over his right shoulder almost parallel to his back. At the same time, his left elbow is raised in such a way as to partially cover his face. This helps him to prepare for the swing and strike.

Jacob Berry is well acquainted with some of the other top MLB draft prospects. Together with Brooks Lee, Kevin Parada, Jake Jung and Gavin Cross, he performed for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. 

Experts also note that Jacob needs to work on his defensive game. It’s not as perfect as his attacking skills.

Cam Collier will be only 17 years old at the time of the draft. He is one of the youngest top prospects in MLB, but he earned the right to participate in the ceremony, thanks to his talent. He is a versatile player who can be useful to his team on all fields. At the same time, some experts believe that Cam can still become more of a true power hitter. 

Cam is the son of former Big Leaguer Lou Collier who played eight seasons in the MLB. The young talent is grateful to his father for the support and invaluable advice he gave him. It is planned that Cam will play at third base. The player himself believes that he should become faster, make his legs move faster. Then his dream of becoming a top player will come true.

Jace Jung

Scouts call Jace Jung one of the best hitters of his age among MLB top 100 prospects 2022. Like his older brother Josh, who was selected in the 2019 MLB draft, Jace is a wonderful infielder. James can be called an Iron Man. He practically does not get injured. Since 2020, when the player debuted for the college team Texas Tech, he has not missed a single (!) match. 

Another advantage of Jace is his discipline and responsibility. In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he did not waste time, but trained with his brother and honed his actions in defense. With this approach, Jace will have a good future.

It captured its first ACC regular-season title, and reached the first Super Regional. Gavin Cross was recognized as the Most Outstanding Player of the Blacksburg Super Regional for his game. 

If Gavin is selected among the first 11 players in the MLB draft, he will set a Virginia Tech record. The current record was set by Joe Saunders, who was chosen at number 12 in 2002.

So, there are only a few days left before the 2022 MLB draft. Actual ratings allow you to understand who the MLB top 100 prospects are. This, of course, does not guarantee anything to these players. History knows many cases when athletes chosen under high numbers did not live up to expectations. On the contrary, players selected in the lower rounds of the draft often gained star status. 

In the days remaining before the draft ceremony in Los Angeles, a lot can still change. It is not uncommon for clubs to exchange their draft picks for player rights, future compensation, or other draft picks to raise or lower their selection order.  Therefore, in the first round of the 2022 MLB draft, changes are possible in the order in which clubs will be selected.
